How to read your photo quality result

In this example, the checker flags blur (−25 points) and a smile (−10). With no other warnings, the score is 100 − 25 − 10 = 65/100.

After retaking, check the new photo to see which warnings remain.

How to check a photo before face analysis

  1. 01

    Choose an original

Choose a clear, original photo of one adult facing the camera. Avoid screenshots and beauty filters, which can hide detail or change facial proportions.

  2. 02

    Review the feedback

Check the head angles and read the tips for any issues found. You might see several at once, such as a blurry face in poor light.

  3. 03

    Retake and compare

Retake the photo using the suggestions, then select “Clear & choose another” to check it. Keep the camera distance and lighting similar when comparing photos.

What does the face photo quality checker measure?

The face photo quality checker looks at five things: framing, head position, sharpness, exposure and expression. It uses facial landmarks, the points detected on your face, along with brightness and detail in the image.

MediaPipe Face Landmarker locates points on your face and provides signals for head position and expression. TryPSL calculates the quality score separately, using its own rules.

Everything runs in your browser. Large photos are resized so the longest side is 1280 pixels. Sharpness and exposure are checked on smaller samples of the face area.

Scroll the table sideways to read each check and its limits.

What the face photo quality checker measures and what each check cannot establish
CheckWhat is measuredHow to interpret it
Face size and framingHow tall the detected face is in pixels, and how much of the image height it fills. This does not reveal camera distance. A tight crop can trigger the same warning as a close selfie.
Head positionEstimated head turn, up/down angle and sideways tilt. Tilt uses the line between the centers of the irises.Misplaced points or errors in the face model can affect these estimates.
SharpnessEdge detail in the face area, measured with Laplacian variance.Resizing, compression, texture and noise can change the result. This is a rough check for softness or blur.
ExposureThe average brightness of the face area and how many pixels are very dark or very bright. The check can miss uneven lighting and cannot tell where light comes from. Look for shadows and washed-out detail.
ExpressionModel signals for smiling, opening your mouth, blinking and raising the inner brows. The model can misread an expression. Use a relaxed face when comparing measurements across photos.

Check for hair covering your features, reflections on glasses and beauty filters yourself. The checker has no separate test for these or other image edits.

How is the photo quality score calculated?

The score starts at 100 and loses points for each issue found. We keep the total between 0 and 100, then round it to a whole number. The deductions follow TryPSL’s own scoring rules.

Photo suitability = 100 − deductions
Limited to 0–100, then rounded.

Examples of deductions

Blurry
25 points
Slightly soft
10 points
Smiling
10 points
Small face
15 points

Only one sharpness deduction applies: “Blurry” or “Slightly soft.” Exposure, framing and expression warnings can add further deductions. Larger head angles lose more points, up to a limit.

Read the issues before the total

Two photos can get the same score for different reasons. Check the warnings to see what needs attention. Even 100 can include a small deduction that rounded away, so it does not guarantee a perfect photo or accurate measurements.

When the checker stops

You’ll be asked for another photo if the checker finds no face or more than one face. It also stops if the face is less than 120 pixels tall after resizing, or the estimated head turn is greater than 25°.

How to take a better photo for face analysis

Start with the tips in your result, then use this checklist when you retake the photo.

Framing and distance

Keep your forehead and chin in the frame, with your face large enough to see clearly. Leave some space around your head and avoid very close selfies.

Head angle

Hold the camera at eye level and look straight at the lens. Keep your head upright, with both sides of your face visible.

Sharpness

Use the original image, clean the lens and hold the camera still. Tap to focus on your face before taking the photo.

Lighting and exposure

Use even, indirect light. Avoid deep shadows, a bright window behind you or highlights that hide facial detail.

Expression

Relax your brows and jaw, keep your eyes comfortably open and gently close your lips. Use the same expression when comparing photos.

Soft edges → refocus

Steady the camera and tap to focus on your face. Enlarging a blurry image cannot restore the missing detail.

Illustration, not an analyzed photo.

Sideways tilt → level your head

Keep your head upright and the lens at eye level. The tilt angle follows the line between the centers of your irises.

Use your checked photo in the face shape detector or face symmetry test, and check that the detected points line up with your features.

Face analysis photo quality FAQs

What does the photo quality score mean?

It summarizes the photo issues found by the checker. The score starts at 100, subtracts points for each warning and rounds the total to a whole number. Small deductions can round away, so check the warnings even when the score is 100.

What is a good photo quality score for face analysis?

We haven’t established a pass/fail cutoff. Two photos with the same score can have different problems. Use the individual tips to decide what to fix, and check that your face and features are clearly visible.

Why does cropping or resizing change my score?

Cropping changes how much of the frame your face fills. Resizing and compression can change the detail used to check sharpness. Compare original photos with similar framing; cropping cannot fix perspective distortion or recover lost detail.

Why can’t the checker detect my face or show a score?

The checker needs one visible face that is large enough and facing the camera. If it finds no face, several faces, a very small face or too much head turn, it stops and asks for another photo. Keep your forehead, chin and both sides visible. If the face model fails to load, check your connection and try again.

Can it detect beauty filters, edited photos or obstructions?

It doesn’t specifically check for these. Hair, glasses, reflections and edits can affect the detected points without triggering a warning. Use an original photo without beauty filters and make sure your features are visible.

Does it check whether the lighting is even?

It checks average brightness and how much of the face area is very dark or very bright. This can miss uneven lighting, so look for shadows or washed-out patches yourself, even if no warning appears.

Does a higher score mean a better-looking photo?

No. The score helps you prepare a photo for face measurements. A smiling or angled portrait can look great while triggering warnings here.

Can this fix my photo or check passport requirements?

No. It suggests how to retake your photo. It cannot sharpen a blurry image, remove filters or check a country’s passport photo requirements.

Is this face photo quality checker free?

Yes. Check as many photos as you like and download your result card without an account or payment. You can use JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC files up to 15 MB.

Are my photo and measurements uploaded or stored?

This checker keeps your photo and measurements in your browser. They are not sent to our analysis server. Reload the page or select “Clear & choose another” to clear them. Any result card you download stays on your device. The optional Looksmax report uses a separate photo upload.

Will a clearer photo guarantee accurate face analysis?

No. A clearer photo makes it easier to inspect the detected points, but those points can still be misplaced and the analysis methods have their own limits. A photo quality score of 85 does not mean the face analysis is 85% accurate.
