How to read your canthal tilt results

In this example, the right eye measures +6.0° and the left measures +3.0°. Both outer corners sit above the reference line. The two measurements differ by 3.0°.

When you try your own photo, check that each blue point sits on an eye corner. Drag any misplaced point and watch the angle update. Your result will show when the points have been manually adjusted.

How to measure canthal tilt from a photo

  1. 01

    Show both eyes

Choose a photo taken straight on, with the camera at eye level. Keep all four eye corners visible and your expression relaxed.

  2. 02

    Check the corners

Check that each blue point sits on an eye corner. Drag any misplaced point, or use Tab to select it and the arrow keys to move it.

  3. 03

    Read each angle

Compare the left and right angles, then check the difference. You can reset any edits or download a result card. Side labels assume the photo has not been mirrored.

What is canthal tilt, and how is it measured?

Canthal tilt is the angle of the line joining your inner and outer eye corners, measured against a horizontal reference. This eye tilt calculator uses the line between your iris centers as that reference and measures each eye separately.

  1. Find the eye corners

MediaPipe Face Landmarker estimates points on your face. We select the inner and outer corner of each eye, plus both iris centers. The inner corner is where the eyelids meet near the nose; the outer corner is where they meet toward the temple.

  2. Allow for head tilt

We use the line joining the iris centers to account for a head tilted toward one shoulder. The dashed guides on your photo run parallel to this line, so they may slope relative to the image edge.

  3. Calculate each angle

We calculate the angle between the eye-corner line and the reference line, using the points shown on your photo. The result is positive when the outer corner is higher and negative when it is lower.

  4. Check and adjust

You can move the corner points if the detector has missed their position. Each edit updates the angles and the difference between them. The reference line stays fixed. Reset eye points brings back the original detected corners.

Why different calculators can show different angles

Calculators can use different reference lines: the image edge, the iris line or a line based on other points on the face. Changing the reference changes the angle, even when the eye-corner points stay in the same place.

Suppose an eye-corner line is 6° above the bottom edge of a photo. If the reference line tilts up by 4° in the same direction, the angle between the two lines is 2°.

TryPSL uses the detected iris-center line. When comparing results, check both the reference line and the corner positions. Moving the points can correct their placement, but cannot undo the effect of camera angle.

These are estimates from a 2D photo. The calculator has not been clinically validated.

Positive, neutral and negative canthal tilt

Compare the line joining the two eye corners with the dashed reference line. The outer corner’s position determines whether the angle is positive, negative or close to zero.

Positive canthal tilt

InnerOuter

The outer corner is higher than the inner corner relative to the reference line. The measured angle is above 0°.

Neutral canthal tilt

InnerOuter

The corners are approximately level. Near 0°, a small change in the photo or point placement can flip the angle from positive to negative. This calculator does not use a fixed neutral range.

Negative canthal tilt

InnerOuter

The outer corner is lower than the inner corner relative to the reference line. The measured angle is below 0°.

Illustrations by TryPSL. Blue lines join the eye corners; dashed lines show the reference. The neutral example shows exactly level corners.

Why your canthal tilt changes between photos

Your result can change when you use a different photo. For a useful comparison, keep your head position, expression and camera setup as consistent as possible.

Chin and camera height

Keep the lens at eye level and your chin neutral. Looking up or down changes how the eye corners line up in the photo, even after the iris line is leveled.

Head turn and distance

Face the camera with both sides equally visible. Avoid a very close selfie, and keep the same camera distance when comparing photos.

Expression and visibility

Keep your eyes comfortably open and your face relaxed. Squinting, a smile, glasses, lashes or shadows can make the corners harder to identify.

Focus and point placement

Use a sharp original photo without a beauty filter. Check all four points on the close-up. If you cannot see a corner clearly, retake the photo instead of guessing its position.

A small study of head tilt and eye-area photography found that head pitch changed measured eye-area features, including the apparent canthal angle. It supports consistent photo conditions; it does not validate this calculator.

Canthal tilt calculator FAQs

How accurate is this canthal tilt calculator?

Treat the result as an estimate. Head position, expression and blurry eye corners can change the angle. We have not validated an accuracy percentage or error margin for this tool. Showing one decimal place does not mean the measurement is accurate to a tenth of a degree.

Can I move the eye-corner points?

Yes. Drag a blue point onto the eye corner, or use Tab to select it and the arrow keys to move it. Hold Shift for larger steps. Your results and downloaded card will use the adjusted points. Choose Reset eye points to start over. Your photo and the iris reference line stay unchanged.

Why are my left and right canthal tilts different?

Your eye corners may sit at different angles, or the difference may come from your head position, expression or misplaced points. Check all four corners and try another clear, straight-on photo. The left/right difference compares the two angles in this photo; it does not measure overall facial symmetry.

Why does my canthal tilt change between photos?

Looking up or down changes how your eye corners line up in the photo. Turning your face, squinting or moving the camera can also change the result. The tool adjusts for a head tilted toward one shoulder, but cannot correct every camera angle. Keep the lens at eye level and your chin neutral when comparing photos.

Why do different canthal tilt calculators give different results?

Tools may choose different eye-corner points or reference lines. Some measure against the image edge; others use the iris line or other points on the face. TryPSL uses the detected iris centers. Check where each tool puts its points and reference line before comparing the numbers.

Which side is left or right?

In an unmirrored photo, your right eye appears on the left of the screen. If your selfie was saved as a mirror image, the side labels may be reversed. The tool cannot tell whether the image was mirrored, so check your original photo if you need to identify a particular eye.

Is negative canthal tilt bad?

A negative angle alone does not mean something is wrong. It means the outer corner appears lower than the inner corner against the reference line. Check the photo and marked points before interpreting a small negative value.

Does a positive angle mean better-looking eyes?

A positive angle describes the position of the eye corners. It cannot tell you how attractive your eyes are or what someone else will prefer.

Is canthal tilt the same as hunter eyes?

No. Canthal tilt is one angle measurement. People use “hunter eyes” online to describe a broader appearance, including how much upper eyelid is visible and where the brows sit. This calculator measures the eye-corner angle only.

Are my photos uploaded or saved?

This calculator processes your photo and measurements in your browser without sending them to our analysis server. Your photo stays available while you use the free tools. Choose Clear & choose another or reload the page to clear it. Downloading saves a result card to your device; it includes your photo only if you select that option.

Is the canthal tilt test free?

Yes. Measuring, adjusting the points and downloading a result card require no account or payment. You can select another photo to repeat the check.
